Matson prepared for tough Falcons challenge

Harlequins head coach Tabai Matson is expecting a tough challenge from Newcastle Falcons this weekend and believes the Falcons will be ‘looking to get stuck in’.

Harlequins won the return fixture in Round 1 of the Gallagher Premiership 26-20 at Kingston Park, and head into this fixture in excellent form, winning back-to-back matches with bonus points.

Falcons on the other hand visit The Stoop struggling for form, losing seven and drawing one of their last eight fixtures, with their last victory coming in the shock 15-14 win over Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park in November.

But despite this, Matson insists that Falcons will be difficult opponents on Friday night.

He said: “Our game against Newcastle in round one was tough. They targeted that game. We’re glad that we were able to play well in the first game of the season and scrape through with a win.

“The table positions this weekend won’t mean a huge amount on each side’s performance. They’ll be coming down looking for any opportunity to disrupt us.

“They’ll have the genuine feeling that they can come down to London, get stuck in and put us off our game, so we’re preparing for that.”

Harlequins sit third in the Gallagher Premiership Rugby table, just one point behind second placed Saracens in the home semi-final slots after bonus point wins against both Wasps and Worcester Warriors.

They will be hoping to go above Saracens on Friday night, although Quins’ rivals host Leicester Tigers in a huge Saturday afternoon clash and have a game in hand.

Falcons meanwhile lie in 11th place, hoping to put some distance between themselves, Worcester Warriors and Bath Rugby, who beat Dean Richards’ men last weekend.
