Ex-Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths emerges as possible St Mirren target amid Eamonn Brophy injury fears

LEIGH GRIFFITHS has emerged as a possible St Mirren target should Eamonn Brophy be sidelined for over a month through injury.

Jim Goodwin revealed Buddies chiefs are drawing up a shortlist of possible free agent signings ahead of a firm timeframe on Brophy’s comeback.

And Griffiths is among those who could be possible signings should the St Mirren number nine be ruled out for a significant spell.

Goodwin was coy on any incomings but confirmed Griffiths name was among a number of free agent options.

Brophy is nursing suspected ligament damage on his right ankle after the 1-1 draw with Motherwell – with Goodwin sweating over a diagnosis.

He told the media today: “It looks as if Brophy has damaged one of the ligaments on the outside of his right ankle.

“We’re waiting on the results of the scan to come back with a definitive diagnosis, but it doesn’t look particularly great at the moment.

“Kevin, our physio, is doing the best he can with the information he’s got but until we get the scan result back, which hopefully we’ll have by the end of the day, we can put a better timeframe on it.

“I wouldn’t want to put a timeframe of a month or six weeks on it, it might only be two or three weeks.

“We’ll rush him as much as we can and Eamonn is the type of boy who won’t need to be 100 per cent and pain free to play. He’s willing to go through the pain barrier for the team.

“If it’s going to be four or five weeks out then we’ll go to the free agent market. It’s not one I particularly like looking through because they’re free agents for a reason.”

Goodwin went on to confirm Griffiths was on a list of possible targets but admitted he’s aware of a number of clubs speaking to the former Celtic striker.

Griffiths is a free agent after his contract at Parkhead was terminated and he knocked back a deal with Dundee.

He had spent the first-half of the season on loan at Dens Park but opted against a contract with James McPake’s side.

Goodwin confirmed: “He (Leigh) is on the list. He’s a free agent and I know there are a number of clubs who are speaking to him at the minute.

“We’ll wait and see what comes from that.”
